... a portable autonomous coring system capable to recover to the maximum of 100 m core sample upto the depth of 3000 m water depth. System has the pressure core sampler to collect gas hydrates at in-situ pressure conditions. |

Capability of seafloor sampling is limited in obtaining surface sample and or to the length of 20 m by piston core sampling devices. Long core samples are possible only be ship based drills through ocean drilling program to cater deep ocean research or industrial demand. Drilling at gas hydrate site in Indian continental margins had proved occurrence of gas hydrate 40mbsf at 1017 m water depth. Hence based on the evolution of remote drilling system in the past two decades sea floor based sampling technology to collect more than 100 m long core samples has been proposed. Primary motivation of Autonomous Coring System development is to validate the gas hydrate occurrence by inexpensive sea floor based long core sampling technique. By this means system will be placed precisely at the selected site for ground truth validation. |

Autonomous Coring System (ACS) is under development by NIOT in joint collaboration with M/s Williamson & Associates, Seattle, USA. System is capable to take 100 m long cores from ocean basins up-to the maximum depth of 3000 m. ACS is developed by wire-line drilling technology at USA with complete technology transfer from design to system realization and sea trials in India. System is integrated with pressure core sampler for the recovery of gas hydrates at in-situ pressure condition.
