1Development and test of Underwater Mining System for long time operation using dynamic positioning system

  • Installed Launching and Retrieval System (LARS) in ORV Sagar Kanya qualified for Crawler Launching
  • Demonstration trails at 450m water depth off the coast of Goa in Arabian sea was completed in the year 2006.
  • Extensive tests were done for Maneuvering and Soil Pumping. The tests were successfully completed by the first week of March 2006.
2
Development of Underwater collector and crushing system for manganese nodule mining and testing in shallow water
  • New enhanced crawler is designed and being fabricated for the collector and crushing system.
  • Collector, pickup and crushing systems where developed indigenously and tested.
  • Electrical and Electronic systems has been suitably modified/ augmented to support the new systems.
3
Development of Remotely Operable In-situ soil tester (6000m)
  • A Remotely Operable In-situ soil tester suitable for operation at 6000m water depth was jointly developed with M/s Sevmorgeo, Russia.
  • The system was successfully tested at a depth of 5200m in Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) during Nov 2006.
4
Development of Remotely Operable Artificial Nodule laying system
  • A system was built to create an artificial nodule bed on the sea floor in order to test/demonstrate the working of underwater mining machine at shallow waters.
  • The system was successfully tested at 500m depth by laying artificial nodules on the ocean floor, off the coast of Chennai in Bay of Bengal during the period June 2007.
5
Remotely operable Boat (ROB)
  • ROB is an unmanned swath type boat powered through batteries and controlled through wireless systems. ROB was planned to make unmanned survey operation in the shallow waters.
  • The working of the ROB was successfully demonstrated in Muttukadu Lake (backwaters) near Chennai.
