Introduction |

AUPD is a global array of 3,000 free-drifting profiling floats that will measure the temperature and salinity with respect to water depth of the upper 2000 m of the ocean. This will allow continuous monitoring of the climate state of the ocean with all data being relayed and made publicly available within hours after collection. |

Conceptually, AUPD builds on the existing upper-ocean thermal networks, extending their spatial and temporal coverage, depth range and accuracy, and enhancing them through addition of salinity and velocity measurements. |

The name AUPD is chosen to emphasize the strong complementary relationship of the global float array with the Jason altimeter mission. For the first time, the physical state of the upper ocean will be systematically measured and assimilated in near real-time. |

| About the Project: |

To participate, contribute and benefit from the internationally coordinated AUPD programme wherein a global array of 3000 floats are planned to be realized by 2005 to make periodic observations of temperature and salinity profiles of the upper ocean up to a depth of 2000 to understand heat and mass transfer. |

To contribute 150 floats in the north Indian Ocean in a phased manner during 2002-07 |

To develop indigenous capability for AUPD floats and sensors |

To establish and operate the Indian AUPD data Centre and function as the Regional Data Centre for the Indian Ocean, with associated capability for data acquisition, processing and quality control |

To develop ocean data assimilation system and national capability to facilitate use of AUPD data for enhancing ocean predictability and climate predictability. |

Deploying 50 floats per year with different sampling strategies covering Northern Indian Ocean

Deploying floats with additional sensors like Oxygen, Chlorophyll, wave current, rainfall and windfall in addition to CTD sensors. |
