Technology Projects > AUPD > Activities

NIOT has been given the responsibility of the float procurement, its deployment and the indigenous development of float technology.

Deployment

This project committed to deploy 150 Profiling drifters at 3-degree space covering North Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. So far, NIOT has deployed 122 floats with 100% deployment success. The deployment locations are indicated in the map given shown. These profiling drifters are capable of diving up to 2000m water depth and measuring in-situ data every 10 or 5 days. The parameters measured are conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen of seawater with respect to depth.

Deployment Location

Deployment of floats from the vessel

Indigenization

Apart from the float deployments, NIOT is also involved in indigenisation of float technology. There are two major activities are involved in float technology one is mechanical system development and another one is development of control electronics and software for float operation.

Mechanical system development:

Design and development of 225cc variable buoyancy engine is completed. Development of high-pressure test facility is completed. Testing of buoyancy engine under simulated condition for prolonged operation is completed.

         250 bar pressure chamber
                   Buoyancy engine

Electronics & Software development

Design, fabrication and testing of control electronic using Military / Industrial grade components are completed. Development of control software is also completed. Fabrication of electronics using low power components is in progress. CTD sensor, AUPD Satellite transmitter (PTT) and other major components were interfaced with control electronics and the prolog testing is in progress to study the reliability of the system.
